All that remained of the Siam Intercontinental Hotel on October 25, 2002

Description : Built on 26 acres of Sra Paduma Palace gardens in the 1960's, the Siam Intercontinental Hotel was a well-know Thai landmark. Although volunteers never had the money to stay at the hotel it was a beautiful landmark. However, when the hotel's 30-year lease expired, it was torn down to make way for another shopping center. (That's all Thailand needs, another shopping center).

My fondest memories of the hotel was when the Andy's wife (peace corps director at the time) asked several volunteers to help set up carnival games for a royal benefit the American Embassy wives were having at the Siam hotel. A bunch of us spent several weeks putting together the "games" and transported them over to the hotel where we set them up on the hotel grounds. Volunteers helped with the event that evening. It was the first and only time I ever saw the King of Thailand from close up. Sadly, other than monuments, there are so few landmarks left in Bangkok that would bring back any memories of the Thailand we use to know
