Dogs were treated differently in Thailand. Some Thais had dogs as pets but they weren't often allowed in the house. Stray dogs live from garbage cans and are shooed away. They may have rabies, etc. Calling someone a 'dog' is a serious insult, and Thais even avoid saying the word in polite company. [Here, Ernie pretends to kick his dog.]
