At the top of the status pyramid are King Bhumipol (Rama IX) and Queen Sirikit, who shows her respect for the King by standing slightly behind him and on his left. The King once remarked that the pyramid was inverted because of his heavy responsibilities for the welfare of his people. One Peace Corps volunteer was even barred from the country for a journalistic observance that criticized a royal.
